This weekend’s winning “YES!!” moments brought to you by CAKE. For plenty of you it’s literal because of all the Valentines desserts you ate (Don’t confess that). For me, it was the alternative rock band, Cake. I heard them on the radio Thursday so I made a little “Going The Distance” video on Facebook. For kicks and giggles. The world of angelic DJ’s must have been pleased with my shenanigans; they sent loads of Cake my way for the next several days. EEK! I LOVE a station that gets it RIGHT. All the peoples that wanted to wear or date someone wearing a short skirt and long jacket-RAISE YOUR HANDS (insert fist bumping). I haven’t heard Cake in forever. For.Ever. It was a good weekend.
So what are you to do when you hear something AGAIN and AGAIN? You can just call it a grand day or… you say, “YES!” and make it A NEW THING. And in this instance, A “Cake Valentine Thing”.
I heard “Never There” on my way to the grocery store. I rolled the windows down, letting the wonky beat troll LOUDLY out of my truck. A man and his wife started jamming, causing their kid to roll his eyes in humiliation. I walked into the store and GUESS what greeted me??? No, not John McCrea. TWO huge displays of cake. CAKE!!! I giggled and decided to find a victim of my CAKE cray.
I asked a gal (that I didn’t know and was alone) who had the biggest brown-happy-I won’t hurt you-eyes if she had a Valentine? NOPE. I asked her if she liked CAKE? Yep.
AND THAT WAS ALL IT TOOK. One minute later she was holding a tacky cookie cake and talking nonsense with someone she didn’t know. She kinda clutched her phone. I think she may have been prepared to call 911 if needed.
We’re gonna be BFF’s, I KNOW it. IT’S ALL SO EXCITING! I MAY have a video montage of all of this CAKE action that I MAY try to link but I don’t know how yet. I will post it on my Facebook account and you can find that link from my home page. It includes a near accident. Perfection. I’m ridiculous.
New Beginnings and saying “YES!” always begin a bit bouncy right? Stepping into “awkward” seems to always be what is first required to gain a friend, grow a career, or accomplish a dream. I want to encourage you and remind myself to look for one small “…let’s start here…” in your daily life that may jar you into being alive. It can be easy and random. Crap-loads of curiosity, bursts of whimsy, and the bravery of one little step all give backbone to NEW BEGINNINGS. Choose to say “yes” or “no” to ONE thing that makes your armpits a tiny bit sweaty. A shaky yes to sponsoring a child living in another country may be the thread that, once unraveled, leads to adoption. The decision to purpose a conversation with your cashier may lead to a friendship you didn’t know you both needed. Eating popcorn for dinner just may be the laughter and oddity that lightens the reality of your family’s weekly load to a manageable capacity. This life is not a dress rehearsal people! We have one shot to explore; winning or failing, you want to say you tried.
Writing consistently seems to be my “yes” and my new. Sharing resources, asking questions, learning together, and offering encouragement make me feel alive. I have ZERO clue what the blog will look like or what the purpose is; for now it’s just my one “next thing”. Yesterday I bought cake. Today I wrote and didn’t say “Shut UP!” or the “F” word to anyone.
Jennie Allen said during the IF Conference this month, “Do the next thing.” I dig that. A lot.
SO…What is your next ONE THING that you can say “YES!” to?
Your “YES” may also include a “NO” to something else…and making a decision to be intentional about either is half the battle. I need to practice this. “Maybe” just feels so good. There are more letters in that word to hug me. It flows and there are no strings attached, right? BUT…lets be real. Half of us are walking around have our one-word affirmation jewelry, an arrow tattoo reminding us that we are the arrow that shoots farther when pulled back, and a free trade coffee in hand, but we somehow still seem to be doing the same crap everyday expecting it to smell different. Let’s smell better. Let’s wear those things and get all the tattoos and drink the coffee but also make the convictions behind them more than just a fashion statement. Let’s “Do the next thing.” We have purpose.
DISCLAIMER: while making my “VALENTINE CAKE” “A THING” I wanted to be all safe and all PARKED because you guys are THE safety patrol. Sooooo when I was in the process of parking for the 2nd part of the video to tell you about the actual cookie cake… I kinda sorta hit A THING called a curb. NO BIGGIE. It was a little bump. I just parked hard. You can still enjoy that part of the video for nothing extra at all.
